FASHIONISTO SPOTLIGHT: Derek de Boer

Uncategorized

Sometimes simple is the way to go, especially in men’s fashion. In a world where it is far too easy to look like you’re trying too hard or not trying at all, sticking to simple silhouettes and classic pieces is always a fashionable choice. I spotted this Fashionista outside my unit on campus and could appreciate his classic sense of fashion. From his blazer to his two-tone pair of wingtips, he was on-point when it came to classic fashion. An appreciation for classic fashion is something that I think often goes amiss in current men’s trends, but this Fashionisto knew how to make classic look effortlessly cool.

Name: Derek de Boer

Major: Philosophy

Year: Third

College Fashionista:Do you feel pressure to pay more attention to what you're wearing in Europe as opposed to in the United States?

Derek de Boer: I don’t necessarily feel pressured. However, I have noticed that European men do tend to be more fashion aware.

CF: What is the most worn item in your closet?

DDB: Nothing too special. I’d have to say that it’s my University of Connecticut trackies.

CF: What is one fashion trend for guys that you just don't understand?

DDB:  Scarves.  I guess the trend never made it to America.

CF: What is one item of clothing you wish you had brought to Holland but didn't?

DDB: In general, I guess just warmer clothes would be nice. It can get quite cold here, especially when it rains.

How To: First, start with a classic men’s blazer to give a nice touch to any look. Try sites like ASOS to find standard and well-priced options. You could try an option with trim detail like this blazer from ASOS.  Another idea would be to try an interestingly colored blazer such as this one, also from ASOS. But to remain completely classic, try a one-button solid colored option like this one from ASOS.  To complete the look, add a classic pair of well-tailored trousers and a nice pair of wingtips. This option from Topman would work well with any outfit.
