Walking around campus in the cold is not a fun task, especially with the wind chill blowing right in your face, but thankfully we have coats! Over the years, I’ve been particularly happy with how the designs of jackets and coats have changed. No longer do we belong to the era of bright, shapeless neon ski wear, but now to the sleek designs of wool coats and streamlined parkas. Now among all the possible coats and jackets around campus, what was it about this week’s Fashionista’s jacket that caught my eye? The puffer jacket, known for warmth but also having a boxy shape, has been completely redesigned for something more fashionable.
There are three things I love about this Fashionista’s coat from the Bay: the length, the collar and the belt. The length suits her perfectly. It hits right above the knee, any longer and it would have looked frumpy. Any sign of frumpiness —especially in the winter time—should be eliminated as soon as possible. Secondly, the collar exudes this great high fashion look to it. Because of the exaggerated shape of the collar, wearing a scarf would easily draw attention to it. Finally, the belt. As simple as it is, it creates the whole silhouette of the jacket. The belt cinches in the waist, creating an hourglass figure.
To avoid looking like the Michelin Man, stick with puffer coats that aren’t too “puffy.” When trying on such jacket, you should still be able to see your natural figure without being swallowed up. Uniqlo has an “Ultra Light” down jacket that is perfect for layering and still shows off your shape without making you look frumpy.
