STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: The Bomber Jacket

Uncategorized

The rainy days of the –BER months in the Philippines present a wonderful opportunity for the Fashionistas here. Now that the chilly days are rolling in and the sun seems to only make a cameo in the daytime, jackets, lots of layering, boots and leather have proven to be appropriate. And one item that sure should make it to your top 10 the-tropics-gone-autumn-esque clothing is the leather bomber jacket.

Designed in the ‘20s as part of the military uniform, the bomber jacket was a thick, straight-cut leather jacket with military patches and memorabilia. It didn't take too long though before the general public wanted to fashion it as well and take it out of the military camps and instead, to the streets. Designers as well didn’t hesitate to put it straight on the runway.

Asia Coronel here is wearing a studded leather bomber jacket from Zara, which has to be the most feminine of the jacket’s variations. Since the bomber jacket comes off as edgy, rock n’ roll and masculine, a tip is to avoid pairing it with too many other edgy elements. Asia may be reinforcing the rock n’ roll look by wearing her jacket with an ACDC t-shirt from Marshalls and sunglasses from Nava, but in contrast, she toned the look down with a form-hugging skirt from Forever21 and these feminine sandals from Tonic.

There are more than 20 variations of the bomber jacket today. They no longer scream “military”, but they do still scream “tough” and “utilitarian” giving Fashionistas a wide selection and more ways to play up this look.
