My name is Noah Goetsch Berch and I am a sophomore at the Rhode Island School of Design, majoring in Apparel Design. I am looking forward to continuing my internship with CollegeFashionista! This past fall was my first term as a Style Guru and I look forward to what spring 2013 has in store! Writing for the FASHIONISTA/O SPOTLIGHT column is the ideal focus for this upcoming spring! I believe that the Rhode Island School of Design has some unique students with interesting stories around campus, so I look forward to not only noticing what they wear on a daily basis, but finding out more about who they are as individuals and why they wear what they wear. Simply learning about how and why they express themselves the way they do. One of my favorite things, hearing other peoples stories, who they are, and what they identify themselves as.
Growing up in urban Atlanta, Georgia, I have always been influenced and fascinated with the idea of fashion and self-expression through style and design. You could say that I grew up in the arts, attending a school where musical theater and art classes were a weekly activity I was involved in. Being given the freedom as well as the opportunities to express myself artistically was a huge influence towards pursuing my passion of fashion design. I love the idea of creating an identity for oneself through the comforts of what they wear on a daily basis. I think that clothing is meant to be something you should feel good about as well as your best self in. In high school I was drawn to fashion blogs, magazines and street style to draw inspiration for my daily looks. I remember coming across CollegeFashionista and finding myself adding it to my bookmarks, visiting the site at least once a day.
Although I am interested in many different subjects related to art and design, fashion continues to stay at the top of the list. I think while growing up I have always been meant to pursue a subject in the field of fashion. As a child I was always collaborating interesting textile prints with contrasting colors, as well as creating projects with clothing on the side. I like to believe that fashion is something we all participate in, whether we realize it or not. No matter what you put on everyday, it’s a collaboration of clothing that is comfortable and something that you feel good in. I think that’s what makes it so interesting. We are all participating in a form of art and constantly getting inspired by others around us.
Some of my favorite styles are collaborations that include contrasting colors and interesting textile prints next to one another. I like making others question. I think fashion is meant to be something that should be questioned everyday. This is what keeps it moving season after season. Without curiosity, where would fashion go? I am also interested in styles that collaborate history within the look. I think the history of fashion is a very interesting subject. I am very intrigued and captivated by looks that incorporate the history of its garment. I especially love the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. I think the clothing from those periods in history are very interesting in the way they are expressed in culture as well as referenced today in society, through magazines and TV shows, as well as individual designer collections. Fashion has an exciting way of placing us in periods of time within history.
I am ecstatic to start my internship with CollegeFashionista! I think that documentation of any form of inspiration is an important thing for an artist, designer and student. Attending Rhode Island School of Design, I have no doubt that I will come across looks and styles that will stand out in bold and vibrant ways, as well as inspire readers and students.
