“You know that thing when you see someone cute and he smiles and your heart kind of goes like warm butter sliding down hot toast? Well that's what it's like when I see a store. Only it's better.” Rebecca Bloomwood, of the film Confessions of A Shopaholic, could not have explained it better. And if you’re a shopaholic like myself, it is time to confess!
Hello Fashionista/os, I'm Natalie Craig! I am a junior at Boise State University majoring in Journalism with a minor in Visual Arts. I write for the Culture section of Boise State's newspaper, The Arbiter, and I have my own fashion series called Bronco Couture. I stumbled upon journalism durring freshman orientation and its been a wild ride through many opportunities, and I'm completely in love with writing. I dream of the day I find my name under an article in Cosmopolitan or Vogue! However, journalism isn't my one and only because fashion outweighs my love for almost anything. Yes, I would get butterflies during Prada talk and yes, I believe that being in love with fashion is a sickness that I hope no one ever finds a cure for.
When I was younger I was starstruck by fashion in all forms. It wasn’t until my first year of college when I I toned up my style from all over the place to a more refined and polished look. My style is still a surprise to me daily but, I would call it something like edgy-chic and very girly with bold statement pieces. Taking risks with fashion drives me to take more risks in my daily life: creating a life that's more fulfilling and full of more opportunities. I'm always traveling and seeing different parts of America's ever changing style which has ultimately contributed to my love and open mind for fashion.
I love the diversity at Boise State. Idaho is very unified with a lack of cultural diversity however, on campus its a different story! With many international students and the creative and artsy vibe of the Northwest, we may not be haute couture but we are unique in our own crafty ways. Even though Boise is a region that isn’t as known in the fashion world as it is in football, we make our way down the university runway like all eyes are on us.
A person’s style is so unique and precious to their identity and the world they live in. I admire all styles, as I believe there is always a story behind every outfit.
One of my favorite words of fashion wisdom come from Coco Chanel, “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”
Our everyday lives inspire us to decorate our world with the fabrics of our choice. Fashion gives a voice to everyone. Whether it is soft, loud, pretty, dramatic, avant-garde, subtle or outrageous, I believe fashion is our greatest weapon against conformity.
I have three words for you Boise State, as RuPaul would say, “You better work!”
