STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Pocket Frenzy

Style Advice of the Week

D.I.Y. fashion is popular amongst students because it’s easy, cheap and creates the most unique trends. There is no surprise as to why so many students are embracing this movement and taking their clothing into their own hands — literally! This semester I have met so many students who create their own trends and inspire everyone they strut past. D.I.Y. fashion can come in many forms and trends; however, the pocket is the most versatile and useful D.I.Y. child I have seen yet!

Today’s Fashionisto caught my eye with his bold pocket design. I also love how he matched his shoes and other accessories according to the colors in his pocket. During the summer, I noticed some pockets on T-shirts, shorts, skirts and pants that sported some variety. While embellished pockets are seen more on men's tank tops and T-shirts, Fashionistas can also embrace the pocket trend.

Not only are pocket designs skyrocketing toward trendy, but the trend is also all about what else you do with your pocket. Rapper Big Sean and R&B artist Usher have been seen with handkerchiefs folded neatly into the front pockets of their T-shirts. This technique gives the average T-shirt a major upgrade, adding a touch of class and elegance in one simple step.

You can find pockets anywhere in an outfit; even if you can’t find them, add them! It is very simple to add a pocket to almost anything for example, a T-shirt. Find fabric of your choice for your pocket, use a cardboard cutout to determine your pocket shape and cut the fabric. Use pins to secure your pocket onto the shirt and sew by hand or a sewing machine, sewing only the bottom and two sides of the pocket.

Personalize your outfit or add a touch of class to something simple and find yourself indulging in this pocket frenzy!
