STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Nifty And Thrifty

Style Advice of the Week

Digging through your grandmother’s closet may not be a hot spot for fabulous vintage finds. Don’t get me wrong, grandma sweaters are comfortable and can be dressed up, but the scent of musk is not in this season. Remove those nose plugs and hit the closest thrift store or antique shop to find dated treasures like this Fashionista’s top straight from a vintage boutique in Italy

This top takes on a personality of its own like the many Renaissance-like busts it’s printed with. Upon spotting it I needed to know where it came from, not to mention how she pieced together her trendy outfit. By adding ankle pants, a leather satchel straight from the leather market in Florence and tortoise shell glasses she completed her vintage look.

Though the top was discovered overseas, the rest of us aspiring Fashionistas still have hope. We may not be able to spontaneously board a plane to see if this top’s long lost twin exists, but we do have an opportunity to stumble upon a similar find closer to home. Hidden within the racks of those downtown thrift or antique stores are precious items waiting to be found. The only way to find them is to do a little digging. At first sight the racks full of shoulder pads and gaudy fabrics may be a little distracting demanding you to take a step back. The easiest option may be to purchase something that is wearable, but if you were blessed with the creative gene have no fear. Simply grab some scissors and a sewing kit and remake that dress in need of some TLC. Plenty of stores offer redesigned vintage clothing like La Petite Marmoset if you are not coordinated when it comes to scissors like myself.

Though the average college student may not be able to afford vintage couture, we can take note from celebrities styled in vintage gowns on the red carpet. We can mimic their envious fashions for a fraction of the price. No longer do you or your finger have to be green with envy, old-fashioned jewelry is another fun find at antique shops. Whether it is a Navajo sterling silver ring or turquoise earrings, there is something for everyone hidden within the aging walls filled with spectacular aging things.

Have no fear vintage finds are always near.
