STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: The Pleated Maxi

Uncategorized

I wonder if anyone remembers the bohemian-hippie maxi skirt trend. In high school, I vaguely remember some students and teachers embracing the boho look, adapting the 1970s historical reference to the modern times. Maybe it was the print, maybe it was the long-length that didn’t do me justice, but for some reason the boho maxi skirt didn’t really rub off on me. Of course, a couple of years later a type of maxi skirt would catch my eye. And that type would be: the pleated maxi.

There is something about maxis that intrigues me now. I’ve never been able to sum it up but I am willing to have a go at it. For starters, it never occurred to me that being modest could look so chic. Maxis are making a comeback with hemlines falling to the ankles and being conservative is becoming the ultra-cool. In the past few months, I’ve seen it here and there but this season seems to key with feminine maxis that are super long. Bloggers are rocking the maxi look with stores such as Zara and Forever New adapting the style to their collections in a variety of colours from black to white to cherry red to pastel mint and pink.

And what about the pleats? Well, maxis already make a Fashionista feel more chic and ladylike. I guess with the adding of classic pleats, a Fashionista can also feel classy and elegant too. It is probably a mixture of these two elements that sums up the obsession of the trend. The pleated maxi skirt is the next best thing to a little black dress because not only do you feel classy, elegant, chic and lady-like, but you also feel infinite (beware: I’ve worn the pleated maxi skirt and you will also begin to notice a few stares on your outfit! It’s safe to say, you feel on top of the world!)

So to sum it up, pleated maxis are a must-have item! What is good about pleated maxis is that there is no dramatic print, so you can top it off with a basic T-shirt, lace top or knit which altogether makes up a classy look. Or like this Fashionista I captured, wear a full maxi dress and add basic accessories like a floppy hat (my new love!), pretty ballet flats and a final complements such as large rings and bracelets. It will look so chic! And what tops it off as well is that maxis are so comfortable, you will feel laidback as ever!  The maxi could never have been so easy!
