I remember the first time I saw an indigo blue denim jean worn by the one and only Serena van der Woodsen on Gossip Girl. Serena, known for her casual yet fashion-forward Upper East Side look, was wearing a pair of indigo blue denim jeans with knee-high studded suede boots, a preppy grey blazer, black leather gloves, a knitted scarf and an alligator handbag to accessorise. This was certainly a city chic outfit at its best. For probably the 100th time, I fell more in love with Serena’s choice of clothing. Of course I realise the costume department is responsible for Serena’s wardrobe, but I can’t help pretend that this Upper East Side New Yorker is just the girl-next-door, a fellow classmate of mine and a fashion-savvy wannabe who participates in the college’s fashion club monthly ritual: a clothing swap with designer looks galore (now I am just dreaming!).
Considering Serena is played by the stunning actress Blake Lively (may I mention she is also Chanel’s new face for the couture brand too?), it seems as though Lively even rubs off on her character’s fashion taste a bit. Out and about, Lively was caught in indigo blue capri pants worn with a white tee and glamorised with an Emilio Pucci gold jacket. Or who could forget the Michael Kors cobalt blue body con dress worn at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards? If the Gossip Girl set was anything like school, then Blake earned A+ in trend reporting: blue hues are the new colour to adore.
To conquer the ultra-blue shade, the most campus-friendly outfit is to wear indigo blue denim jeans with a simple grey knit or a preppy top. Just like this Fashionista I snapped, wear a sleeveless shirt and top it off with a bold accessory that brings out the classic shirt. Add in the statement boots, a cute handbag and a boyfriend watch for a hint of Serena’s tomboyish charm. Soon enough you’ll feel like you are strutting the streets of the Upper East Side in no time!
