Before I began writing this post, I was looking through a stash of old-school possessions from 2007, and I had found a zine I created in my 11th grade English class. Funnily enough, I themed it around the ’80s. My zine included a review on ’80s fashion, a poem about my crushes on 90210 and in New Kids On The Block, a mock interview with the ’80s, as if it was a person, a short story about my dream dancing with Michael Jackson, a letter I wrote to Steven Tyler and a self illustrated Rubiks cube. I was obsessed with the 1980s! However, as I will confess now, if I could go back in time and live in a different era, I would probably choose the ’80s, considering a mixture of the above.
The ’80s were in full swing with fashion trends, which is another reason why I would choose to live in that decade. My favourite? Exercise gear from films such as Flashdance or Fame and music videos like Let’s Get Physical by Olivia Newton John. Neon colours, leggings, leotards, leg warmers, jelly bracelets, sweat bands or Nike kicks, you name it! Neon gym gear was a favorite trend for then and now; I’m already tempted to dress like a back-up dancer from Fame for Halloween this year.
Today, to get caught head-to-toe in neon gym gear is a bit of a faux pas, however, the neon colours don’t seem to fade. Designers have adapted the neon inspiration from time to time in their collections–a little punch of colour to excite the mood. If you are a bit shy with colour in the clothing department, why not try accessories that feature a refreshing neon colour palette. From a Mulberry pink fuchsia jewelry case, to my new favourite jewelry designers Shourouk and their fluorescent yellow feminine necklaces, neon accents brighten up any outfit. Neon also welcomes the flattering compliments you will get by passerby’s, trust me I know. Just like this Fashionista, who added a simple neon necklace and watch to her classic shirt and shorts, lightened her outfit by creating a playful feel and extra spark.
Spotted: The best neon accented accessories were spotted on Marc by Marc Jacobs’ spring 2013 runway. From coin purses, iPad cases and transparent totes, a neon refresher is the way to go!
