STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Scale of the Skull

Style Advice of the Week

Life is all about finding the perfect balance. Whether it is the fleeting perfect coffee-to-cream ratio, juggling extra curricular activities with classes or even budgeting your grocery budget with your yearn to shop. In terms of clothing, we seek to find a balance between different styles in order to seamlessly transverse between looks from day to day. For example, to liven up a monochromatic outfit, we seek to add an accent color or piece. To toughen up a feminine look, we typically turn to leather, studs or simply darker colors or accents.

For many seasons now, something that has continually seemed to pop up on every sweater, scarf and accessories of all kinds is the skull. A symbol typically associated with a dark and somber, sometimes even creepy undertone has become a widely accepted trend.

One way this fad was able to thrust itself into our closets is with the help of major fashion house Alexander McQueen, who has included a multitude of skulls in designs since around 2009.

This Fashionista is perfectly emulating how skulls can have the scare factor removed when juxtaposed with the appropriate look. In this case, the more casual look for studying and running to class has been immediately stylized with the addition of the skull sweater.

If you are dying to add this look into your rotation, and are as daring as this week’s Fashionista, try a sweater with a large skull like this one here from ModCloth. If you’re a little more hesitant to incorporating a skull into your outfit, try starting smaller with this delicate skull bracelet from Urban Outfitters.
