LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BOYS: Thrifting, America’s New Past Time

Let's Hear it for the Boys

I remember being younger and being very frightened by the idea of buying used clothes and goods. Thrift stores were only for old people, reserved as a place for parents to take old clothes and toys. Not anymore! Thrifting has become a trend that has swept the nation and hipsters everywhere are on board. New artist, Macklemore, even has a hit song about it entitled, “Thrift Shop.”

This Fashionisto shows us how to rock thrifted clothes in this cool, blue get-up. This Fashionisto is a freshman at UCF and is an avid Goodwill customer. He was excited to tell me about his latest find—this blue button-down with small, white polka-dots. To thrifters, it’s not shopping; it’s more like a treasure hunt, to find a unique item of clothing that can’t be found in stores.

Celebrities are notorious for thrifting as well. Take for example, Ke$ha. I’m pretty sure that the majority of her wardrobe comes from thrift stores. Also, Lady Gaga has been known to do some second-hand shopping as well. In her early days as a performer, she would buy vintage clothes and customize them to her needs.

Some people are still on the fence about this whole “wearing used clothes idea.” And, if you are not an individual, this trend is not for you! But, if you like to be original, go on a little treasure hunt at your local consignment shop and create a look unique to your style. Trust me, people will take notice. Rocking this look is all about confidence, so hold your head high and make people believe in your style. Good luck, and happy thrifting.

Hint: Pair thrifted clothing with high-end or current pieces to create a lovely and fashion-forward juxtaposition.
