Hello all! My name is Sarah Phillips and I’m from suburban Fishers, Indiana. I’m currently a sophomore at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia. I’m double majoring in Business Administration and Psychology and hope to some day work in retailing and merchandising. After graduating, I plan on moving to the Pacific Northwest and combining good fashion with good music. This is my first semester writing for CollegeFashionista and I’m really excited to be presented with this opportunity! I will be covering the ACCESSORIES REPORT every Friday with tips to top off the perfect outfit for any occasion.
After spending the majority of my adolescence as a tomboy, I finally opened my eyes to the endless wonders of what fashion could truly be. My mother was more than happy to help me trade in my gym shorts and T-shirts for a skirt and dress, and with that my style took a complete 180. Ever since then, I’ve had an infatuation for clothing. I have a bit of a habit of buying anything that catches my eye. My always-expanding closet features items from places such as Urban Outfitters, GAP, Levi’s and Madewell. I also enjoy finding one of a kind gems at thrift shops and working them into my wardrobe.
I don’t exactly stick to a certain style; instead I like to mix them up and dress for all the aspects of my personality. One day I’ll don a flannel from Goodwill with leggings and tall boots, and the next I’ll pair a high-low maxi skirt with a printed tank and a top bun. Recently I’ve been a big fan of chambray shirts. I mix one in to an outfit about once a week – they’re just so versatile!
Over winter break I cut off about a foot of hair with the phrase “new year, new me” in mind. I had my long straight locks for years and felt it was time for a change. I want to use that as inspiration to enhance my style in this upcoming year. That’s what I love about fashion; you can take risks and explore whom you really are.
As cliché as it sounds, I get a lot of my fashion inspiration from watching TV. Whether it’s reality shows like The Hills or dramas like Gossip Girl, I see something I like and try to relate the look back to myself. I also look for new trends on sites like Pinterest. Some of my favorite fashion icons include Blake Lively, the Olsen twins and Rashida Jones (she inspired my haircut!).
I’m so excited to be writing for CollegeFashionista and getting more involved with the fashion industry. I hope that my time as a Style Guru will inspire you to try some new looks and further your love for fashion!
