ACCESSORIES REPORT: Studding Details

Accessories Report

One trend that has frequently been featured around campus is stud detailing from head to toe. Fashionistas have embraced them in all colours and sizes as the perfect accent for collars, jackets, shoes and bags. Studs are a fashionable way to bring a little edge to an outfit, but can very quickly verge into punk rock territory. To avoid looking like a wannabe rock star, keep the detailing to a minimum by having it featured on just one aspect of your outfit or on your favourite accessory. Balance out the tough girl studs with pieces that are more feminine for a chic and contemporary look.

This Fashionista demonstrates this perfectly keeping the edgy detailing to her shoes only. Although she paired them with faux leather shorts, her chiffon top with girly embellishments kept the outfit modern and trendy. The pewter and black studs on her Sam Edelman flats gave off a subtle sparkle, making them subdued enough to make a statement without overpowering the entire outfit. Plus, she is right on trend with her menswear-inspired loafers for this season. For a more flirty look, you could try pairing the flats with a summery dress and fedora or floppy hat for the perfect casual daytime outfit.

You also don’t need to be able to afford designer duds to get on board with the trend. Studded pieces are available at a variety of affordable stores but are also a great D.I.Y project. You can purchase different kinds of studs from your local arts and crafts store and customize just about anything that is in your wardrobe already. If you are feeling a little apprehensive, start with something small like a bracelet. Once you become confident with the technique you will be sprucing up just about every boring sweater that has been stuffed away in the back of your closet.

To get shoes like the ones in the photo, go to Steve Madden and Jeffrey Campbell for very similar styles. You can try incorporating studs into other accessories too like a clutch or bracelet. Zara also has a bunch of collar-studded shirts that are office friendly and perfect for a night out.

Spotted: Givenchy features all types of studs, sequins and other haute couture embellishments in their spring 2012 collection.
