In non-fashion terms, the word “tribal” brings on thoughts of indigenous people and aboriginals in rural parts of the world. However, when we are speaking of fashion, “tribal” holds a completely different definition. It’s colorful, geometric, patterned and fun. I’m happy to feature a Fashionisto this week for the first time, and he shows us just how to put an interesting spin on his casual tee by pairing it with urban elements.
Name: Tilman Monsanto
Major: Sociology
Year: Sophomore
CollegeFashionista: Where did you get everything you’re wearing?
Tilman Monsanto: So the shoes are from Aldo. Red slim fit jeans from PacSun. Tribal-type tee from Forever 21 as well as the tassel. The jean shirt is from H&M. And lastly, the clutch is Louis (Vuitton).
CF: How would you describe your personal style?
TM: I guess I would describe my personal style as eclectic. I definitely like to change it up from day to day, for example from preppy to hipster.
CF: What do you wear on a typical day?
TM: Any given day you can see me in sweats, or something from Abercrombie to Express. It just depends on the day and my mood.
CF: In your opinion, what is the best men’s fashion trend there is? How about the worst?
TM: Best and worst trends – let’s see…I really like the bright color polos and shorts that were really popular this past summer as well as color blocking. The worst I would say is flip-flops! They’re definitely acceptable, but some guys don’t take very good care of their feet.
CF: Where do you shop for your clothes?
TM: I can definitely go in the mall and find everything I need. Aldo for shoes of course, H&M, Forever 21, Zara, Express, Guess – the actual store, not ‘G by GUESS’ – and True Religion for some really nice denim. I also don’t mind thrifting every once in a while.
CF: Are there any celebrities you think have impeccable style that you channel?
TM: I don’t really keep up with celebrities too intensely. I really just wear what I think is cool and comfortable for me.
CF: What is your favorite article of clothing to sport?
TM: I don’t even think I can pick a favorite article of clothing. I change it up so much; I can like something one day and the next it’s off to Plato’s Closet.
How to: If you want to nail this tribal city look, first find a cool graphic T-shirt, like this Hurley one from PacSun. Colored skinny jeans complement the snazzy top, and a tassle necklace give it an innovative twist. Brown leather kicks, like this hip Diesel pair, top it all off with a carefree street vibe.
