It has been almost a week since my arrival in Barcelona. I haven’t gone on too many touristy extravaganzas just yet, but I have been traversing the surrounding areas of Plaza Catalunya, close to where my classes are located. By far, this city boasts some of the best people watching I have ever seen. It may even trump the likes of New York City. There are two things I’ve noticed about Spaniards’ style. For both the men and women, their style is sometimes daring, but it is always effortless. With an H&M on almost every corner, how could it not be?
When I was exploring the side streets of Las Ramblas to pick up a quick bite, I immediately noticed this Fashionista’s royal blue lurex leggings as she was walking by. A cross between metallic velvet and velour spandex, this plush material is making appearances on the bold youth of Barcelona.
Another oncoming trend I have seen on the streets is platform sneakers. Jeffrey Campbell has been putting chunky footwear into the limelight, but these shoes are stomping on concrete more than catwalks.
This Fashionista’s edgy haircut, cross necklace, jean jacket, embellished skull ring and leather fringe bag completes her rocker chic look. But it doesn’t look like she tried too hard or overdid it. Like other Spaniards’ ensembles, each with a unique style all their own, it was just effortless.
After I took her photo, she was kind enough to help me to help me with a misconjugated verb when I was stumbling with my Spanish skills. She said she was trying to improve her English as well and asked for my email to practice with me. Here in Spain, language exchange is called an “intercambio.”
