WHAT TO WEAR: Winter Break

What to Wear

“If we had no winter, spring would not be so pleasant: If we did not sometimes taste adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome.” – Anne Bradstreet

Winter has a way of breaking us down and building us back up all at once. I find that during the winter fashion is prevalent and treasured in a way different from any other season. We learn to treasure our fashion as our shelter.

I spotted this Fashionisto and his look breathed of chic menswear. I was interested in his sweater, as they are my and many of you alike I’m sure, obsession this season. I hadn’t seen many rock that sweater style, the shawl collar two button. I was shocked to find when I asked him where he got his sweater to hear his response: “My mom made it!” I was stunned. It was so sweet that his Mom had made it for him for Christmas, and it got me thinking of two things: Weasley sweaters and our generation’s new love of handmade garments.

Our generation has changed from a fashion stand point. We are embracing more crafty and hand-made goods of fashion. Our generation used to be stereotyped by having an obsession with “fast fashion,” which means it’s cheap, addictive and unsustainable. Fast fashion could also be associated with looks that are trendy and of low quality textiles, being used once and having to be thrown away. I think it is impressive and says something about us as innovators.
In Richmond we have many wonderful young and talented knitters and sewers. I know that a popular spot to find all things needed for knitting is at The Yarn Lounge in our own beloved Carytown. They have all the colors of yarn you could ever want, all the supplies, books, their own blog, and they’re even holding classes. Needless to say The Yarn Lounge has it going on, and we should all hop on board. Also, for those of you who love Twitter, I found a great account that can give one constant inspiration for new handmade garment ideas, @Fashion4_You.
Let’s take a lesson from this Fashionisto featured and pair a handmade sweater with the structure of a denim button-up. Expand your closet’s horizon by applying a new section, of all handmade garments. They may become your most beloved and proud pieces!
One Simple Change: Swapping the sneakers for black dress shoes takes this look from casual street chic to date night debonair instantly.
