LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BOYS: The Newsboy King of Richmond

Let's Hear it for the Boys

I was biking around campus when I spotted this Fashionisto's hat, or cap rather. It is similar to this Gray Herringbone Newsie Cap. I knew immediately I would have to chase him down. It had reminded me of my grandpa, a very sweet Italian man who loves to wear his clothes with old-fashioned style and impeccable textiles. It also reminded me of the movie Newsies. Newsies is a musical based on the New York City newsboy strike in 1899 due to being exploited by their bosses. I watched it a lot in history classes in middle school and loved the film. There was something very raw and rebellious about the costuming in the movie. I always was a sucker for the costuming and this song in particular: King of New York.

After watching the video, you can see how this Fashionisto is wearing something that correlates with the Newsies vibe. I like that the look has a focus of practicality but with good taste. I love the cap and I am a fan of the layers. This Fashionisto also pulled off the denim on denim look, which can be hard sometimes. He makes the look coordinate effortlessly using a dark blue denim jacket, similar to this Levi Brand Jeans denim jacket. Pairing the dark blue denim with a tan toned jean pant is genius. I love these Lee jeans in dark tan, for example. I also like that the boots are dark brown and that the green fleece all mesh well together and further balance the look.

I think it is really cool that for this look you can see both a nostalgic feel from times far in the past and still having a modern practicality aspect combined.

Hint: Fashionistos, bring back interesting pieces that make you feel nostalgic of centuries ago. While enjoying celebrating the beauties of past fashions, give them a modern dynamic by layering, which will give it an on-the-go flexibility and of course your personal touch.
