Fashion trends are constantly resurfacing and this fall we find the grunge of the '90s creeping back into our wardrobes. Plaid, combat boots, and tights are just a few of the trends that take us back to the days of listening to Nirvana and watching My So-Called Life. I have always admired the innovative plaid looks of Angela Chase (played by Claire Danes), so when I spotted today’s Fashionista rocking plaid on campus, I was thrilled.
This Fashionista wears a high-waisted black skirt from Forever 21 paired with a black bandeau. The straps on the bandeau add structure to the simple lace top. Try a bralet from Topshop if you prefer a little more coverage. To complete the look, she added her own homemade plaid cut-off. Adding plaid over basic blacks creates the perfect grunge style, while cutting the sleeves off of an old oversized button-up saves money. Peruse your local thrift stores for the perfect plaid and then get your scissors ready. You’ll be amazed at how easy it is to create something similar to this shirt from Topshop on your own.
Equally important to creating the perfect grunge look are your accessories. Black knee highs paired with gray combat boots add edge to the girlishness of the skirt. The silver collar necklace, similar to this, draws your attention to the oversized sunglasses and hoop nose-ring this Fashionista adorns. Mix-matched earrings add to the indifferent attitude that goes with grunge. This earring was made by the Fashionista herself from Edge of Urge, a local boutique in downtown Wilmington. Different length and colored feathers mixed with a shark tooth create an edgey look that is entirely unique. Not in Wilmington, North Carolina? Not a problem! Create your own pair here.
Still not convinced you have what it takes to pull off a look similar to today’s Fashionista? Put on your favorite '90s playlist and channel your inner grunge. You’ll be amazed at how fun it is to rework the trends of a decade you actually remember.
