WHAT TO WEAR: Out With Friends

What to Wear

Occaisionally you’ll catch a rare peacock on campus; somewhere between the hooded freshman, the suited business students and the jean-clad masses, there will be a Fashionista out to catch the eye. This week’s Fashionista, with her neon curls and Tavi Gevinson look, is one such statement dresser and the perfect example of what to wear out with friends.

My theory with clothes and friends is simple and straight from Dr. Suess: “Those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” So taking the plunge to dress out of the box should be a no-brainer around the people you love. This Fashionista chose a cute collared dress (I suggest this floral by ASOS) and a statement belt, like this one from Big Buddha, to keep the attention on her quirky style. Completing the look with artfully torn tights and her favorite combat boots, it’s no doubt this Art History major is really dressing to her tastes.

Getting her look even more personal is the statement pin on her trench coat and the customized Skrillex hairstyle, which can do nothing but stand out. Though her shaved sides may be a little extreme or just not your style, the bejeweled pins from Oscar de la Renta and Marni are all about making a statement without taking to the scissors (which for a girl like me, sounds just about perfect).

One Simple Change: Switching out the combat boots for some Jeffrey Campbells and trading the trench for an asymmetrical cut jacket takes this look from out with friends to a night out on the town. This jacket by 2nd Day adds shape to a flowy printed dress and effectively transitions your outfit from coffee shop study session to art gallery opening.
