When I first found out that I would be writing LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BOYS this semester, I shared the news with my roommate and she responded with, “But there are no guys at JMU..” This is, sadly, true. The male population here at James Madison University is a whopping 39%, but can often feel even smaller if you major in something like art, nursing or education. But even though that population is minimal does not mean these boys shouldn’t be accounted for, especially when it comes to their style.
The typical JMU boy isn’t a lazy dresser, thank goodness, but he does own a pair of Sperrys, a North Face and a good old pair of Khakis — and he wears them regularly. Trying to find a guy who's stylish on this campus isn't difficult, but it does take extra willpower to find a guy who has a style that's all his own.
I've spotted this Fashionisto on campus quite a few times; his style always attracts my attention because it is filled with so much character. From sophisticated-chic, to bad boy edgy — you name it, he's probably worn it. Afterall, being committed to experimental fashions and straying away from outfit boredom and predictability is what truly makes a Fashionisto, right?
The day I finally ran into him during daylight, camera in hand, he was ironically standing out from the crowd in a great camouflage jacket which happened to be thrifted. Paired with a camel colored button-up he was successfully rocking the military trend. He wore loose-fitting dark-denim pants which he cuffed at the bottom, along with purposefully untied shoes, giving the look a rebellious kind of edge.
But, if being experimental is the first thing that makes a true Fashionisto, then not shying away from the power of accessorizing is the second. The addition of his brown leather strap watch, which he bought in NYC, his black leather wrap bracelet, which he bought in France, and his sunglasses, which he refers to as his “Will-I-Am glasses” really give the outfit its finishing touches.
Take a cue from this Fashionisto and add elements to your outfit that will make you stand out and give you that bit of character that gets you noticed. It can be as simple as sporting a unique find from Goodwill, to cuffing your baggy pants and untying your shoelaces.
