STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Somewhere Beyond The Sea

Style Advice of the Week

You may not be an hour’s drive from the Hamptons this summer, but that doesn’t mean you can’t rock an East Coast-inspired nautical look! With hints of navy and white and simple, structured pieces, the nautical look is a timeless American favorite and a classic summer standby. Though the typical nautical ensemble includes high-waisted shorts and solid polo shirts, this fashion season takes the sailor look a step further with bold colors and chunky accessories.

I stumbled upon this preppy Fashionista while she sipped an iced latte at a trendy coffee shop downtown. With her white-hot skinnies and striped peplum blouse, she looked patriotic, breezy and ready to set sail! She paired her striped blouse with a dainty yet dramatic jeweled cuff bracelet, which perfectly references the popular color blocking trend while still balancing her sailor-savvy style. She topped it all of with a chic pair of aviators and a neutral, slouchy Marc Jacobs bag.

White denim and khakis are the preferred bottoms when it comes to anything nautical — primary colors and horizontal stripes are much more noticeable (and appreciated) when they can bounce off of a blank canvas. Navy, red, Kelly green and yellow are all nautical-friendly accent choices, but don’t be afraid to incorporate some neons or pastels into your look. Take it to the next level with a bright pair of Top-Siders or an oxford-style shirtdress — just be careful not to over do it (think Charlotte York, not Popeye).

Whatever your location, a sailor-inspired ensemble makes for the perfect summer get-up. Let your inner prep make a cameo appearance and nonchalantly strut your stuff at your next backyard barbeque or shopping trip. All aboard for a nautical summer!
