STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Long Hot Summer

Style Advice of the Week

If there’s one thing Arizona residents look forward to every summer: monsoon season! Come mid-July, torrential downpours and sporadic dust storms seem to be everyday occurrences. Though Arizonans get to experience a few gloomy and moisture-filled weeks, it’s no secret that our desert/mountain temperatures remain slightly scorching and record-breaking until well into the rest of the nation’s fall season. We southwest Fashionistas learned the importance of layering and incorporating a mixture of light and heavy pieces long ago. Rain or shine, we still stay chic!

I spotted this Fashionista walking outside during a burst of sunshine directly following a mid-day thunderstorm. Because it was still extremely warm outside, she paired her long striped skirt with a sturdier sleeveless denim top — the perfect monsoon-ready ensemble. She sported a chunky, rose gold Michael Kors watch and layered on a few bold and colorful bracelets. To complete her look, this Fashionista rocked a tinted pair of oversized aviators, perfect for reflecting those gorgeous mountains in the distance.

We’ve seen this look more often than not this summer, especially in college towns and on campuses across the country. Denim is an awesome and effortless way to dress down your summer maxi and ease into fall in a casual manner. The structure of a denim button-up or a jean jacket when paired with a feminine, flowing maxi skirt creates a funky and class-friendly look. While East Coast collegians get to rock their brand new sweaters and knee-highs come fall, us Arizona Fashionistas have to incorporate summer trends into our wardrobe for a few extra months. July stripes and summertime silhouettes can easily transition through August and into September in our neck of the woods — the maxi plus denim combo is an ideal look for our long, hot summer!
