Known for its earthy, laidback atmosphere, Flagstaff is home to some of the most chicly dressed hippies on the planet — nowhere else will one witness so many flannels, beanies, hoodies and TOMS in one general vicinity. While there are plenty of grungy, granola individuals gracing this city with their presence (and rocking Birkenstocks like they’re going out of style) there is also a fair amount of Fashionistas/os who embrace Flagstaff’s signature style and translate it into a more pristine overall look. These stylish collegians know how to balance the effortless vibe that is essential to a true hippie’s wardrobe, while still presenting themselves in a well put-together fashion. This Fashionista sports a majorly relaxed getup and shows us all how to stay sleek while emphasizing our free-spirited roots!

College Fashionista: What is your style philosophy?
Janel Robertson: My style philosophy is all about wearing unique pieces I love while being confident and comfortable. I enjoy expressing myself through my clothing and wearing whatever feels right at that exact moment. I tend to gravitate toward darker colors and items that bring me a sense of security. My favorite pieces are the ones that I discover on sale or at thrift stores, because I love how every article of clothing has its own story, and it is up to us to continue that story.
CF: Which trend are you most excited about this fall?
JR: My favorite fall trend this season is the infinity scarf. I find myself going to grab one every morning, to throw on, before heading out. I just can't help myself.
CF: What inspired your outfit today?
JR: Today, I was inspired by the beautiful Flagstaff weather and the opportunity to still wear my TOMS before the first blizzard. Once snow season is here, the boots come out for good, so I wear flats as often as possible. I admire the TOMS movement and feel especially good when I can support them through my wardrobe.
CF: What is one piece you think every college girl needs in her closet?
JR: I believe every college girl needs to have a go-to scarf in her closet. Scarves can add so much additional fun and personality to an outfit. Plus, they provide a way to look good even when it is unbearably cold outside. I've always firmly believed that the better you look, the better you feel.
How To: Master a sophisticated, comfortable look like Janel’s by keeping it simple. Start with a pair of dark skinnies and some neutral distressed TOMS—a Flagstaff must-have and everyone’s favorite philanthropic fashion statement—then throw on a loose, printed top. Pair that combo with a chunky knit infinity scarf and your look immediately gains some serious style points. Of course, turquoise is the ultimate flower child accessory, so don’t be afraid to go overboard in this category! Finish it off with an oversize corduroy tote and your look is complete—just remember to add some dainty and feminine touches to keep it interesting. Travel on, free bird!
