#MakeYourMark—Give Back To Your Campus This Fall

Hello September! There is something about the turn of the calendar page that signifies the official start of the school year for us. A new school year means a fresh start on so many levels—from class schedules to trends to getting out on campus and getting involved.

Our Style Gurus are making their mark on campus this fall—and not just with their killer senses of style and impressive camera skills. From volunteering at local hospitals to tutoring high school students to raising awareness for global issues, our Style Gurus work hard to give back to their community and make their campuses a better place.

We will be showcasing the #MakeYourMark stories of our rockstar Style Gurus all month long. CollegeFashionista invites you to make this September one to remember and start the school year off strong by making your own mark. Whether it is as small as smiling at a stranger or starting an on-campus club, get out there and get involved in the movement. Be sure to share your story on social media by tagging @CFashionista and using the hashtag #MakeYourMark.

“My sister Jeanette and I have created an event called the ‘BeYOUtiful Me Project’ to help spread awareness to our community about eating disorders, mental health, and suicide prevention. We eventually want to make this event a non profit!”Nicole Ramee, FIT

“I’m making my mark by being active on campus at the vice president of public relations group. Our group organizes networking fairs for the communication college as a easy connection between student and internship opportunities.”—Rachel Hendryx, Towson University

“I’m the social media manager for the Collaboratoy on campus, a non-profit organization which aims to increase hope and transform lives in both US and international locations. The organization first began as an idea within the engineering department and has grown exponentially since then.”—Bree Whitelock, Messiah College

This semester I will be volunteering at the senior citizens home across from my campus. It has been my dream, as weird as it sounds, to open up my own senior citizens home and recreation center one day!”Emily Garren, Manhattan College

“I make my mark by helping those in need and standing up for what is right. Being a bystander is never something to be proud of. My school is a community in which we love giving back on. Each class of students creates a project and steps in to help out in the local community.”—Rebecca JaffeSusquehanna University

I think its crucial to be involved on your college campus, as its the best way to make a difference and leave your mark. Besides being a Style Guru, I’m on the Panhellenic Scholarship Committee, a fundraising committee member for our local dance marathon charity, a member of a social sorority and a tutor at a local elementary school. I think it’s fun being so involved, as you get to meet people just as dedicated and involved as you!”—Meredith GosnellCollege of William and Mary

Being involved on campus is one of the greatest ways to make your mark, but it isn’t the only way. I believe saying “hello” to everyone and giving them a smile is one of the best ways to leave your mark on your campus. It not only boosts other peoples moods but makes you feel good about yourself. Leaving your mark comes in many forms, and being personable and kind is a great one.“—Mary Timko, Buena Vista University

I am a captain of the Northeastern Dance Team, which makes me incredibly active on campus. Beyond our practice three times a week, we dance at all men and women’s basketball games, promote sporting events on campus and work as student ambassadors for the athletics program. This past year, I even performed on national TV at an NCAA March Madness game, and competed at Nationals in Daytona. (Think real life Bring It On.) Basically, a lot of my spare time is spent wearing red and black and chanting, ‘Go Huskies!'”Kelsey Zimmerer, Northeastern University

To me, making your mark means doing something that you would not ordinarily do. I am making my mark by stepping out of my comfort zone. I am joining clubs that I have always been highly interested in, but always scared to do. This school year is all about stepping out of my comfort zone and meeting new people!Belinda Dunu, Virginia Commonwealth University

I’m involved in an organization called ‘The Girl Code Movement.’ The main goal of the organization is to raise awareness about the prevalence of sexual assault on college campuses. We aim to start conversations about this difficult topic because many women will experience or know someone who experiences sexual assault. Our hope is by starting a conversation about sexual assault, men and women can help others and themselves as well as decrease the chances of this happening.”—Mandisa Shields, Syracuse University

I’m involved in student government, otherwise known as Rutgers University Student Assembly or RUSA. My role is on the Allocations Board, whose purpose is to use the money provided by students’ tuitions and fees to fund the about 400 student-run student organizations on campus.Dana Cai, Rutgers University

I am an advocate for those with type one diabetes. I have raised money, spread awareness and lobbied Congressmen and women about issues that affect those with type one. This is an issue very close to me and something I hope to do until we have a cure.”Clara Livingston, Carleton College
