STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Back to School Cool

Style Advice of the Week

The day I tossed aside my trusty backpack in high school in favor of a purple canvas tote bag felt like a leap toward adulthood. One-sided shoulder aches disregarded, I proudly walked the halls feeling like a much more polished, feminine academic.  But might the backpack be making a collegiate comeback? This Fashionista's dainty Longchamp edition is the perfect finishing touch to her back-to-school ensemble.  Convenient, comfortable and widely available in versions much more chic than your go-to Jansport from middle school (check Urban Outfitters and H&M), ones like her's are popping up on the backs of college Fashionistas everywhere as classes come back in session.

While shorts, sandals and a lightweight shirt are standard Southern California gear, her outfit plays with a variety of earthy hues to make a rainbow of neutrals perfect for a warm autumn afternoon in Los Angeles. Her sheer scarf — a find at a local market — plays double agent by adding some dimension to the ensemble and also shielding her shoulders from the sun en route to class. Her sage green tailored Charlotte Russe shorts are weather-appropriate, but dress up the outfit just the right amount. Low-heeled Crown Vintage sandals by way of DSW are much bolder than your everyday pair of flip-flops.

Have fun with your wardrobe this back-to-school season. Try trading in your big-girl purse for a fresh spin on the backpack. Dress up in your first-day-back best and opt for a dressier take on the standard shorts-shirt-and-sandals. Set your style tone for the year!
