As November is officially here, we Fashionistas tend to turn to leather boots, chunky scarves and cozy knitwear. While I love nothing better than wrapping up in a comfy sweater and trendy jeans, I think that fall fashion has the potential to be much more varied. Skirts provide a fashionable deviation from the usual jeans and leggings.
This Fashionista looks completely put together from her smooth pixie cut to the perfectly matching socks and oxfords. However, it was her startling red, A-line skirt that caught my attention. Rather than pairing the skirt with a pair of tights, this Fashionista opted for a pair of over the knee socks. Balancing the width of the skirt, she layered a chambray button up with a sturdy cargo jacket. To control the bulk of the utilitarian jacket, she belted the jacket around her waist rather than zipping it.
For fall skirts, choose heavier fabrics like wool, tweed and ponte knit. This will create a greater contrast from lighter spring options, as well as the more obvious perk of being a warmer fabric. There are endless styling options for skirts during the fall. Scrunched socks with ankle boots or colorful, opaque tights with knee-high boots are two of my favorite ways to style a skirt during cooler months. Or take a cue from this Fashionista and pair over the knee socks with color coordinating flats. Choosing socks and shoes in the same color will elongate the leg and create a streamlined silhouette.
Layering on top makes the skirt even more season appropriate. Combine a flannel button-up with a cable knit sweater for a laid back look or a striped top with a tailored blazer to dress up a more casual skirt.
Mix up the usual jeans and sweater fall uniform with a skirt like this Fashionista’s red number and you will definitely stand out from the crowd.
