LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BOYS: Taking Care of Business

Let's Hear it for the Boys

College prepares us for a number of things, including how to conduct ourselves in a professional environment. Like any other environment, there are certain rules to follow when dressing professionally, yet being professional doesn’t mean you should compromise your personal style. Currently trending in men’s fashion is the fitted, tailored suit style. Knowing how to dress for success just may be the extra oomph you need to land your dream job or internship.

I spotted this Fashionisto out of a crowd of students leaving Library West. His outfit stood out to me because it is a great example of a true business formal outfit. He keeps the ensemble crisp and clean with a slim-fitting white button-down dress shirt, tailored gray dress pants and a gray suit jacket to match. His shirt is tucked into his pants; as it should be for business formal wear.  The red in the tie he chose to wear complements the suit well by adding a pop of color, yet the gray in the tie gives the look an overarching cohesiveness. Because it is important to keep accessories to a minimum for business formal wear, this Fashionisto is sporting a silver watch and a plain black belt to match his black dress shoes. Although the look is simple and straightforward, it makes a huge statement in the professional realm because less is always more when wearing a business formal ensemble.

Hint: Since wearing a suit can curtail the personality inherent in your outfit, take a hint from this Fashionisto and have fun with the tie you select to complement your suit.  Don’t be afraid to explore different color schemes, prints, or patterns when selecting your tie. Awesome ties can sometimes make for great conversation starters in an interview or at an event. But be careful about length, appropriate business formal attire suggests that your tie should fall right about where your belt sits on your waist.
