STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Show Your True Colors

Uncategorized
Spring is fast approaching in waves of color. This Fashionista is a preview of what’s in store for the upcoming season. She was certainly a pop of color on the UW campus. While her choice of vibrant color is not isolated to one statement piece, there is an element of consistency contributed by matching her simple black footwear with her basic black t-shirt. She is far from yellowbellied in her striking yellow pea coat and the lavender hues in her scarf are visually pleasing in association with her corduroy pants.

Color was all over the runway indicating a major trend which students can easily imitate. Pantone, the world’s leading authority on color, named Honeysuckle the color of the year for 2011. Designers such as Jil Sander, show how this bold, uplifting color can be incorporated into your wardrobe. Her collection is not only full of Honeysuckle, but is also full of other colors chosen by New York designers as the top ten Pantone colors for women’s fashion for spring 2011, including a version of my personal favorite, Coral Rose.

The difference between the popularity of color this spring as opposed to previous seasons is the ability to saturate an outfit with color. One of Nina Ricci’s runway looks mixes a brilliant pink shade with bold yellow. This balancing act does not require the help of any neutral colors.

Hint: Be daring with your color choices this spring. Check out Pantone’s website and mix your favorite of these dynamic colors together. If you like this Fashionista’s look in particular you can find a similar jacket at ModCloth. Pants, comparable to the color and style of this student’s, are available at American Apparel. The great thing about this trend, however, is you don’t have to play by the rules. Be individual and let your true colors show!
