It’s always a good thing to see a classic revived. After all, tradition and a storied name can, in most cases, only get one so far for so long. Before long, it becomes necessary for the product or institution in question to take some measure, albeit sometimes a small one, to uphold its legacy. Behold the Barbour jacket.
What Barbour has directly or indirectly done to claim its “resurgence” cannot be pinpointed, but what we can rest assured of is that the brand has reentered the world of fashion trends and style. Growing up in South Georgia, I grew quite familiar with the iconic outerwear. The jackets and many of Barbour’s other products are and always have been popular with the outdoor culture of southern lore, and they serve as one of many small elements that lovingly tinge the South with antebellum reveries. What’s more, men, women and children wear Barbour jackets alike. The history behind the brand dates back to the late 19th century and is fairly interesting (click here for more info).
As of late, Barbour jackets have been spotted far out of their natural habitat, and by this I mean that a sizable population that owns them has migrated to the concrete jungle. I admit that I’ve enjoyed seeing this staple contrived paired in interesting new ensembles — Olivia Palermo wears hers belted with tights and blue jean cut-offs. Barbour’s pieces are even available at Opening Ceremony and J.Crew, which says a lot about the brand’s movement into the urban environment.
Per usual, Athens has not been long in catching on to this purported “trend;” it seems that the jacket was on everyone’s Christmas wish list, for the campus and downtown are both now ablaze with the popular Bedale and Beadnell styles. This Fashionisto was spotted sporting his with an attractive button-down and a rugged baseball cap. Hailing from Charlotte, North Carolina, he has owned his Barbour for many years, which is a testament to the hardiness of the jacket’s material and its capacity to withstand wear. Like me, he is somewhat surprised by the recent explosion of Barbour aficionados, but he is more than obliged to remain in good company.
