It is the beginning of June, and the heat of summer is here! And of course summer fashion is here, too. In my search for a Fashionisto for the start of summer, I was hoping to find someone wearing a bold and cool summer outfit, and on this hot day this Fashionisto has done just that. He was staying cool, literally and figuratively, in a wide array of colors and cooling mechanisms.
This Fashionisto’s outfit is unconventional, but he wears his style proudly. He is colorful head-to-toe, wearing turquoise Sperry Top-Siders, Nantucket red shorts, a cuffed blue Ralph Lauren button-down and a straw hat. The Fashionisto is not afraid to just go for it. He pairs his button-down with the shorts because the Ralph Lauren logo is red and allows for a subtle match. And again, without being obvious his black Wayfarers with red sides are tucked nicely in the middle of his shirt, carrying the red all the way through the outfit. My art teacher once told me that an artist wants a triangle of color to “ground” his/her artwork and bring the piece together. Whether he knows it or not, this Fashionisto has a triangle of red through his shorts, logo and sunglasses that ground his outfit. This enables him to bring in the turquoise shoes and lend a summer feel to his outfit.
Also, I like his straw hat! I rarely see anyone wearing a straw for anything other than a party involving cowboys or my dad watching my soccer games, but he is pulling it off. Form follows function, and the hat is definitely doing its job by blocking the sun for his fair skin, and it adds a summery touch to his preppy outfit.
Hint: What can you take away from his style? Be bold—color-block rich hues like his royal blue and Nantucket red and pair them with boat shoes. Also, subtly carry out a color throughout the outfit and make room for an unexpected color.
