Everyone has a couple of totally random T-shirts that circulate from sleep and gym shirts to small bundles in the back of a drawer. Whether it be from a vacation, for free, from your grandma or just something that showed up one day, we all have this collection and I don’t think we give it the credit it deserves.
Unfortunately, these are always deemed the go-to shirt for dirty jobs or just take up space, but little do we know they can serve the purpose of a graphic T-shirt under a jacket and look amazing. Let all your old garb see light and breathe some new life into that spring break T-shirt with the tag still attached.
Like you may have guessed, it all begins with the T-shirt. If you’re into keeping things casual with a modern grunge twist, the graphic T-shirt is perfect and so easy to pair with all the pieces you probably already have in your closet. All you need is a couple jackets, a flannel, your favorite fitted jeans and either sneakers, like this Fashionisto, or boots like a pair of black Dr. Martens. This is also a handy look for us poor college folk, as a trip to Goodwill with just $10 in hand could get you more than one new outfit—and how nice would it be to not have to ironically pay extra for that coveted worn-in quality?
The next key layer is a jacket. This Fashionisto’s denim jacket is essentially where the grungy feel comes in and there are lots of other jackets and layer options as well that’ll have the same effect. I would go for a leather jacket or a flannel by itself or layered underneath. As for jeans, or even cut-offs, dark wash or black in a perfectly fitted style are ideal; he opted for black, which always works.
This casual but effective ensemble is one of my favorite ways for guys to interpret the popular ‘90s trend. It’s so easy and makes use of all those T-shirts you’ve been ignoring and a cool jacket at the same time, without too much going on.
Hint: Another way to have some fun with an old T-shirt and play on the grunge style would be tie-dye! Try taking one of your old shirts and tie-dyeing it to incorporate some cool colors and get a brand new piece for your closet.
