Too cool for (summer) school. That’s what popped into my head when I came across this Fashionisto near the Prairie View A&M University library. With an African American art history book tucked under his arm, this is a Fashionisto who knows a thing or two about applying what he has been busy studying. Specifically, this Fashionisto draws from his summer school lessons for sartorial inspiration. From his bright red hat to his camouflage backpack, nearly every detail of his outfit represents a trend that is currently popular and being seen all over our campus. Let’s break down this Fashionisto’s outfit and see what style lessons you can take away.
Although this Fashionisto’s outfit is relatively simple, it is perfect for those hot days of summer when you are tempted to not make an extravagant effort. This Fashionisto takes an easy, on-the-go look and updates it with unique choices that let his personal style shine through. Khaki pants are neutral, versatile and can be worn as readily as blue jeans. His bright red hat is a stylish and practical accessory that adds a pop of color to his outfit while simultaneously providing some extra shade. While snapback and panel hat styles are very popular at the moment, you could consider a fedora or even a bucket hat. In addition to the color of his hat, I also love the pop of print added by this Fashionisto’s T-shirt. The print spices up his outfit and creates a breezy, effortless look that is sometimes tricky to achieve with just a T-shirt and pants.
Check out this similar style. Switching out solid colors for patterns and prints on your clothing is an out of the ordinary approach to making any outfit more stylish. He layers his patterned T-shirt with a denim vest, allowing him to stay at a comfortable temperature, whether in the classroom or walking around outside. Adding interesting shoes and baring some ankle keeps the look cool. Fun frames, wooden bracelets, a trendy backpack and an air of confidence complete his look.
With the end of summer looming, venture out into the retail world now and see what sort of items you can find significantly marked down. Keep an eye peeled for end of season bargains, and keep your other eye peeled for items you wouldn’t normally consider rocking. Trying out new things (like a printed T-shirt or unique hat) will keep your wardrobe original and fresh.
Hint: The modern “tribal” or “ethnic” print trend -inspired from all around the globe- is hot hot hot right now! With about three more weeks before the end of summer session for students at Prairie View, there’s absolutely still time to jump on this trend’s bandwagon. Take a page out of this Fashionisto’s notes and study up on the actual names and stories behind these historic prints. You may find yourself stylishly inspired. At the very least, you’ll find yourself fashionably informed and culturally aware.
