Summer has finally touched down here at the University of North Carolina, but some respectable students were proactive and decided to enroll in summer classes. You would think tank tops, flip flops and athletic shorts, right? Not quite. While they are completely acceptable for the summer classroom setting, they will not fly with the fashion gods. Take today’s Fashionisto for example. Instead of dressing down before the trek to the almost deserted campus, he puts the ‘prep’ in ‘preparation’ for a bright future with his outfit.
Preppy fashion traces its origins back to the Ivy Leagues. Just think crisp polo shirts, pressed button-downs and loafers. Nowadays, preppy fashion is displayed in the catalogues of Tommy Hilfiger, J.Crew and Brooks Brothers, and it is worn on college campuses around the United States. This Fashionisto’s ensemble made me think of Polo Ralph Lauren: all-American, collegiate and professional.
This Fashionisto started with a light blue button-down shirt, untucked and strategically buttoned. Not only is it a classic in preppy fashion, but I also recognize it as a staple in men’s fashion. The shirt’s lightness allows for layering, so he pulled on a navy shawl-collar cardigan over it. Cardigans, much like crewneck sweaters and seersucker sport coats, fall in the category of lightweight preppy outerwear.
To create a color balance, he kept cool hues on top while his pants and shoes boasted warm tones. He wore a pair of light corduroy pants in a rich burgundy, and his watch strap matched his pants in color, which was a nice touch. If it weren’t for his statement gray and white striped socks, his burnt sienna leather desert boots would have been camouflaged by his pants. By showing the divide between pant and shoe through his socks, the Fashionisto appears taller. Looking as smart as can be, today’s Fashionisto embodies preppy fashion at this southern university.
Hint: The weather is finally warm enough to go sockless. Lose the socks, and show some ankle by cuffing your pants. But if you absolutely have to wear a pair, make sure that they make a statement like this Fashionisto’s. Not sure where to start? Take a look at these eccentric socks from J.Crew.
