For many of the students here at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, summer is just an exam away. Morale is low, and the separation from freedom is agonizing. Pain aside, everyone has their own way of staying hopeful, from posting motivational sticky notes on bathroom mirrors to asking their parents to send care packages full of Ramen, candy and snacks. Today’s Fashionisto hangs onto hope by incorporating pieces packed with color in his outfits.
This Fashionisto is a master of color play. Just one look at his outfit will make you think that he was headed to a funeral. His bold choice of black on black was reminiscent of the outfits seen on the streets of New York City before the latest Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Not only was his outfit black on black, it was also denim on denim. His outfit featured a faded black denim jacket layered over a black hoodie and a pair of black skinny jeans. He contrasted the darkness of his outfit with touches of white. Underneath all of his outerwear, he wore a simple white tee. It meshed well with the simplicity of his outfit. He also boasted a fresh pair of predominantly white kicks. The black and white created the perfect backdrop for his colorful details.
If you take a closer look, you’ll notice the bursts of color. An aged rainbow bracelet hung on his wrist: a reminder of hope and a banner waving for LGBT rights. His kicks also brandished some bright colors. Get in touch with your artistic side and create your own Nike kicks. The colorful pieces not only breathed life into his overall neutral outfit, but they will also keep hope alive in the homestretch. With finals week coming to a close, all the students here will be over the rainbow very soon.
Hint: Throw splashes of color onto your own outfits. There are two ways to go: you can wear a garment that’s already brimming with color, like this bright floral tee from Zara, or integrate a solid color garment in a neutral outfit, like this pair of 5” inseam chino shorts from Bonobos.
