From the Editor, Let's Hear it for the Boys

Each major in college has a unique skill set associated with it. For pre-med students, it is their ability to think quick on their feet and understand the inner-workings of the human body. For journalism majors, it is the unique ability to craft words into a story that is equal-parts newsworthy, emotional and attention-grabbing. But for photography majors, perhaps the most important skill to have is the innate ability to know what makes the “perfect shot.”

Streetstyle photographers have an extra challenge. Besides knowing all about photo aperture, shutter speed and depth of field, they also have to know a thing or two about fashion. Specifically, streetstyle photographers need to know, “What makes a great outfit?”

This Fashionisto was toting his camera equipment around campus when we decided to turn the camera on him. From his well thought out look, it is clear this photographer knows more then just a thing or two about fashion.

For starters, he knows the importance of a good-fitting pair of denim. Sure, super skinny jeans are not for everyone; especially Fashionistos. But that doesn’t mean you have to go the extreme opposite with your denim either. This Fashionisto’s pair strikes a nice balance; keeping the look tailored and clean with a great bootcut. Opt for a modern bootcut style, like this pair by 7 For All Mankind, that is a little tighter then the traditional style.

Next, this Fashionisto shows he is in touch with trends by sporting a military-inspired coat. This trend has been on our radar for seasons now and shows no signs of slowing down. While this Fashionisto opted for the more traditional yet risky camouflage, you can still achieve the look in a less overt way. An olive green bomber has touches of military influence without looking like a member of the ROTC.

Next time you get stopped on campus by one of our Style Gurus, be sure to appreciate his or her outfit. As this Fashionisto proves, photographers happen to knowa lot about fashion.

How To: An important part of fashion is making a look your own. The best way to achieve this is through accessories. I am all about this Fashionisto’s beanie and oversized glasses. It definitely speaks volumes about his personal style. But if that casual/hipster look isn’t your thing, opt for a snapback and a pair of aviators for a totally different look that is totally your own.
