I have to disagree with Karl Lagerfeld’s statement: “Sweatpants are a sign of defeat. You lost control of your life so you bought some sweatpants.” I believe everyone should take pride in their appearance, but not sacrifice comfort. As I have gotten older, my style has taken a more relaxed approached. I would like to emulate Gwen Stefani who has mastered a cool sporty appearance. Compared to years past, the sweatpants look has been updated. Anyone can look put together with sweatpants, but its a matter of utilizing the right pieces.
This guy rocks an effortless style that makes active wear appear polished. Silhouette is the key to elevating a sporty look. No one can benefit from ill fitting garments. I admired the unique pants being baggy, but loved how they taper in towards the knee. I feel that this silhouette would be flattering for men and women alike. It’s modern and visually interesting. His sweatshirt is not too slim nor baggy, thus complementing the fit of the pants.
The white stripes help break up the black-on-black monotony. I liked the variety of stripes in this outfit; the sweatshirt has a vertical stripe pattern all over and the pants have a racing stripe on the side. Being a slightly different pattern keeps the look fresh. Being too matchy will often make an appearance dull.
The accessories also enhance the sporty look. He wears a baseball cap backwards and a unique backpack. Both stay within the black theme of this outfit. The backpack makes a statement through its leather fabrication and large spikes. To complete the outfit, he wears some wayfarer sunglasses and some sleek tennis shoes. I appreciated that the shoes were not bulky compared to most athletic shoe styles. If I had shoes like that I would be more compelled to work out.
Hint: Athletic wear can be elevated by pairing it with the right pieces. Pair a slim pair of sweatpants with some boots and a parka coat for a look that transcends outside the gym.
