With snow and rain one day and sunny skies the next, there’s no telling how Mother Nature will be feeling. Gray skies are no stranger here. However, the sky isn’t the only thing that has been gray the past few weeks. Gray denim has also made some appearances on campus.
The great thing about denim is that you can never have enough of it. There are so many different cuts and even more colors to choose from. Aside from black and blue, the third most common jean color is gray. The beauty of gray is that it can go with anything. You can make it casual with a graphic T-shirt and Converse or you can dress it up with a sports jacket. They key to styling gray denim is through the shade of gray. A heather gray pair of jeans is a nice for the transition into spring. They’re not as bold as white pants, but just light enough to test the waters of trendy fashion. On the other end of the spectrum, there is charcoal gray denim. This color is as close as you can get to black without actually being black. This shade of denim would be perfect for a night out in New Haven. Last but not least is medium gray. Right in the middle of the gray color scale, it’s perfect for any season. Medium gray looks great with bold colors, such as red or royal blue.
This week’s Fashionisto is wearing medium gray jeans with a blue plaid button-down shirt. The button-down offers the pop of color needed in a gray themed outfit. The shirt’s pattern alternates between bright blue, white and gray. The undershirt, which matches the jeans and the shirt, is a light gray. For shoes, he is wearing caramel lace-up boots. Not only did this Fashionisto perfectly coordinate his color scheme, but he also traded in the classic blue jeans for a new shade of gray.
Hint: Don’t be afraid to try new colors when it comes to denim. Spring is the perfect time to experiment with different colors and styles. If you’re new to gray denim, try medium gray jeans, similar to this week’s Fashionisto. For a casual look, wear your favorite band T-shirt along with some Vans. May I suggest a Red Hot Chili Peppers tank top with canvas red Vans?
