Weejuns, or classic loafers, was a very common trend that saturated the fashion industry in the United States beginning in the early 20th century. Just to give you some background, these preppy shoes are not directly related with their sisterly look-alike oxford shoes, the shoes that got their name from trending at Oxford University.
An interesting misconception, loafers did not originate from the Ivy Leagues but rather have roots all the way from Scandinavia. They were known as Norwegian fishermen shoes—comfortable, practical and lined with leather. As a matter of fact, the name of the shoe Weejun is a corruption of the word “Norwegian.” The shoe style permeated across Europe during the early 1900s and eventually made their way to Paris, where they were introduced to Gertrude Stein’s “Lost Generation” comrades.
From then on, the trend carried over to the Gilded Age in the U.S. and was largely associated with the wealthy upper class. To paint a better picture for you, these would be the shoes reminiscent of those who lived in what F. Scott Fitzgerald described in The Great Gatsby as the East Egg. However, much later, the shoes would eventually trickle down to the bourgeoisie.
Now, the resurgence of loafers’ ubiquitous popularity can be seen today through the relaxed uniform of businessmen and college students. That said, these loafers are one of the main attributes that I loved about this Fashionisto’s outfit.
His relaxed yet crisp ensemble is perfect for walking around campus or an informal business meeting. Instead of pairing the loafers with dress pants, the Fashionisto opted to wear chinos and a plaid button-down shirt. The mix of colors matched with this outfit were perfectly put together, coordinating the navy blue hues with a cognac belt and black leather loafers. So, if you’re not up for lace-up combat boots or wearing the cool but uncomfortable shoes, seek out a pair of these timeless classics. So what are you waiting for? Quit loafing around and snag some of these stylish shoes before the holidays!
Hint: For a more formal occasion, try out classy fitted pants with tassel loafers instead of chinos and simple slip-ons. For more ideas, check out my eBay collection here! My eBay collections were curated as part of the CollegeFashionista and eBay collaboration with Style Coalition #FOLLOWITFINDIT.
