It is a common misconception that pastels are reserved for girls as many boys get worried that their feminine tone will take away a bit of their masculinity. Don’t worry boys, pastels are nothing to be embarrassed about. In reality, pastels are taking boys’ fashion by storm and are perfect for any summer scorcher or warm fall breeze. If you are looking for a way to ease into this trend, take a crack at a pair of aqua or baby blue shorts (you have to admit, even if it is a gentler tone, blue is stereotyped as a “manly color”). Feeling particularly brave? Try a pair in the color that is usually labeled as a “girl color”: salmon/pink.
As I always say, “Go big or go home.” This Fashionisto did just that. Unlike a typical guy on campus usually caught sporting the exhausted combination of a colored T-shirt on top and a pair of blue jeans on the bottom (borrrrrrring), this Fashionisto twisted the typical combination so that it instantly caught my eye from all the way across The Oval. His outfit consisted of a denim button-down on top and yellow shorts on the bottom. Plus, who wouldn’t be instantly drawn to such a big glowing smile? No outfit is complete without one.
Combined with this unique outfit was a timeless pair of chocolate Sperry Top-Siders; there’s no better way to bring out the inner boater and frat star inside of you. Not only did the dark nature of these shoes contrast nicely with the light color of the shorts and top, but it also gave the outfit a more polished—wearing a pair of sneakers wouldn’t have done this well thought out outfit justice.
You think you are ready to face the challenge of mastering pastels? Take a stab at it—I promise you won’t be disappointed. Maybe you’ll even catch the eye of that cute girl that sits in front of you in Calculus, Chemistry, Spanish or whatever class you may be taking this semester. I can’t think of a more eye-catching piece than a pair of bold pastel shorts. So c’mon boys, take a step outside your comfort zones and try a pair out.
Hint: To make this outfit more compatible for a cool fall day, try swapping the pastel shorts for a pair of colored pants. With this minor adjustment, Fashionistos can pull off the same great look while taking on any chilly autumn breeze.
