The first days of spring are resplendent. If you’re like me and cultivate an (ahem) more dramatic world view, the drudgery of winter feels like a real-time Shakespearian tragedy. We spend most of winter looking forward to spring, it’s a magical time. Heck, the bard himself even said: “When proud pied April, dressed in all his trim, hath put a spirit of youth in every thing.”
This particular day was extraordinary, straight out of a sonnet. Sixty degrees and sunny. Students were lingering outside, sipping iced coffees. I even saw students epitomizing the college experience by playing frisbee on the Diag. As I strolled through the University of Michigan law quad, I was awestruck by the sophistication and livelihood of this Fashionisto’s outfit. His incorporation of spring brights and classic fits make this a perfect outfit for these magical April days.
He starts out with a checked button-down with various shades of blue. The shirt is a great staple for any closet. It’s appropriate for the early spring through the fall, and works for many occasions (Memorial Day, Fourth of July or just a casual summer get-together). He pairs it seamlessly with blue, slim fit pants. The color coordination works really well in his case because the shirt and pants are both softer, more muted colors. Therefore, there is cohesiveness in his outfit without anything looking too matchy-matchy. Also, his pants are tailored, yet relaxed, which keeps the entire outfit from looking stiff. All in all, the pastels give his entire outfit a “spring” tone, a breath of fresh air from winter neutrals and heavy layers.
His shoes definitely work to tie in the pants and shirt. He wears gray suede shoes with blue laces. This is a super fun and visually interesting choice, and works effortlessly with the rest of his outfit. I love the muted gray color of the boots; they are a deviation for the normal brown and taupe but still go with most pieces. He also wears a light weight jacket to account for possible unpredictable weather later in the day. Spring jackets are EVERYWHERE in stores right now; this one from J.Crew is one of my personal favorites this season. I would advise to stick with neutral-colored jackets; it’s much easier when you can just throw them on and not worry about possible clashes. Finally, I marveled at how this Fashionisto even carries his books in style, wearing a navy blue backpack with camel-colored accents. All in all, this is a preppy and cool spring look that can carry him effortlessly though the season.
Hint: Alright boys. It’s time to man up and incorporate some color into your wardrobe. It can really improve your mood and take your style to the next level. Try some colorful chino pants or, if you’re daring enough, Chubbies. Trust me, you’ll be well-received.
