It’s that time of the year again: the first week of classes. I know what you’re thinking Pitt boys: “Why can’t I just put on some sweatpants and my free Pitt Program Council T-shirt I got from the activities fair? I’m just going to class right?” Wrong. Yes, for those of you whose goal is to wake up five minutes before class starts, dressing a little nicer than the norm just isn’t an option. However, putting that small amount of effort goes a long way. It not only heightens your mood, but also gives you that confidence boost needed for the first days of school.
Getting ready to promote his club for the activities fair, this Fashionisto (who is Korean Culture Association’s President) alters certain elements of proper business attire to something presentable, yet casual for an informal event. Although his outfit contains typical components of business attire such as a button-down, a tie, chinos and black loafers, he manages to keep his look simple and not too over-the-top.
This Fashionisto keeps his look casual by bringing color to his outfit. Rather than resorting to the typical white dress shirt with black dress pants, he pairs a checkered blue and white button-down with gray chinos. Chinos are a great staple piece for a classic, yet relaxed look as they are fitted loosely on top and fitted at the bottom. He adds sleek by combining the pieces with a structured black belt and skinny tie. His rolled-up sleeves and gray messenger bag also add to the relaxed look of his outfit without looking too put-together. However, my favorite part of his outfit is his tasseled loafers, as their intricate detailing adds to his personalized simple look.
If you want to dress down the look a little bit more, there are a variety of different options. The best part of men’s clothing is that you can mix and match different pieces of the same outfit in an array of ways. Especially for a hot and lazy day, you can switch the chinos to some colored chino shorts or fitted jeans and the loafers to some sneakers or boots. When the weather starts to cool down, layer your button-down with a sweater or moto jacket.
Hint: The main key to a proper business casual outfit is to have the right fitted pants and shirt. Be careful when buying chinos that are too tight at the top or too baggy at the bottom. This Fashionisto perfectly exemplifies loose at the top, tight at the bottom, which prevents a certain sloppiness of baggy pants that distracts from a put together outfit. So remember boys, make sure everything you wear is ironed, tucked in and well fitted, and you’ll be good to go! Happy start to the school year!
