Even though the fall season has officially kicked off, here in Austin we have yet to feel the cooler weather. Scoping out many different kinds of menswear outfits on campus, one of my favorites is the quintessential button-down shirt paired with a classic pair of Sperry Top-Siders.
That’s right, Sperry Top-Siders are still being worn in Texas while some Fashionistos are already lacing up their boots for fall in the North. As preppy as this look may seem, I would suggest categorizing these shoes as a more classic, durable and sartorial footwear considering their history. From their humble beginnings in the 1930s as the acclaimed boat shoe or deck shoe, Sperry Top-Siders made a huge comeback in the ‘80s and have resurged in popularity. Anyone else see Jake Ryan rocking these at the school dance in Sixteen Candles (Come on, I know I’m not the only one who loves a good John Hughes film)? For those who didn’t notice, these boat shoes were the de facto shoe choice.
Aside from the walk down memory lane, the ever-so-popular boat shoes have landed a new role on college campuses and have had a real renaissance nationwide. That said, this ubiquitous trend was no exception at UT Austin. I loved how this Fashionisto sported his Sperry Top-Siders with aplomb and looked effortlessly fashionable and stylish. So, following this trendy Fashionisto’s example, anyone else getting on board the top-sider trend? We know we are. Hope to see you on deck!
Hint: For a fall look to prepare for the cooler weather, try pairing Sperry Top-Siders with dark colored chinos or denim and a button-down flannel shirt to keep warm.
