Leather, leather, leather. That word seems to be on everyone’s lips this year. It’s true: leather is a great, durable classic that you can’t really go wrong with, but at the same time, I’m getting tired of all the leather hype. People keep throwing the term around and acting like leather is a newly discovered wonder material. In the meantime, all I tend to see are the same, safe variations of leather garments, and this oh-so-of-the-moment material is starting to simply blend into the background.
It’s always exciting to see someone who’s taking a trend to another level, or simply ignoring the rules of what’s generally acceptable. This Fashionisto’s appliqued leather-look jacket is the kind of thing that I scour the streets hoping to find. It’s weird and audacious, but boldly fashion-forward. Embellished and painted leather jackets have been popping up on the runways for the past few seasons, but they haven’t been appearing much in public yet.
This Fashionisto’s jacket is a vintage piece from the ‘90s. It fits right in with Jeremy Scott’s aesthetic and the ‘90s club kid craze that seems to be ever on the rise. I just can’t get over those green appliqued flames. They’re just so simultaneously good and bad that I love (and hate) them, but I guess I felt that way back in the day too. The way things are going with smiley faces and alien heads, it seems likely that flames will be one of the next ‘90s trends to influence mainstream fashion. Better get on it!
This Fashionisto paired his statement jacket with a white T-shirt, basic black jeans, a beanie and sneakers. He was wise in keeping the rest of his look simple, considering how beautifully over-the-top his jacket is. One touch that I adore is the Sharpie-drawn ‘X’ on this Fashionisto’s T-shirt. He explained that he got a stain on the shirt while he was on the go, so he covered it up with an X. Somehow, I find that so simple and beautiful. Fashionistos/as who invent their own fashion solutions are so inspiring!
Hint: As we’ve all heard, a leather or leather-look jacket is a must-have item in your wardrobe. A basic jacket is great, but invest in a statement jacket as well. It doesn’t have to be over the top, just a slight deviation from the regular will do you wonders. Check out this suede and leather bomber, for example. Or just go crazy. There is something innately impressive about leather, and a bold leather look can’t be beat!
