Although it is only January, stores are already filling up with nautical items — a trend that has become a staple in most of our wardrobes for the past few years now. From anchor graphics to the classic blue and white stripes, nautical is everywhere and apparently this Fashionisto knows that too. When I spotted him, it felt like a fresh breath of spring coming at me through the cold winter air.
To break it down, this Fashionisto had an outfit that was fully on trend, yet still timeless. His classic blue and white sweater is updated with the shawl collar that has dominated menswear this season. The shirt he is wearing underneath is a chambray button up, worn underneath the sweater not only for warmth, but for an added detail. In keeping the outfit classic, he adds a simple straight leg pair of jeans (with some distressed details of course) and a timeless silver Fossil timepiece. For the finishing touch, he wore a pair of high-top, brown leather Vans. I found these shoes particularly interesting because although they are technically a tennis shoe, they also double as an ankle height leather boot that goes with absolutely everything. The medium brown shade and hiking boot laces give an edge that I’m sure will attract many guys to this shoe. The shoe toughens up the look a bit, making it less preppy and a little more edgy.
This outfit is great for mid-January for multiple reasons. First, he layers add warmth while still allowing style to shine through. Secondly, the Vans keep feet warm and dry, yet attract the eye due to their uniqueness. Thirdly, the nautical vibe of the sweater is on point because it is current and now that the holidays are over, it gives us all a chance to dream of spring although it is still so far away. In all, this outfit is extremely versatile and flexible. Although this Fashionisto wore it on his first day back to class, it could have just as easily been worn on a date to dinner and a movie or to a casual workplace for an afternoon shift.
Hint: To try out the nautical vibe this winter, keep the weather in mind and look for a simple sweater or sweatshirt with blue, white and/or red stripes. It will give your outfit just the right nautical touch, without becoming overly trendy for the spring.
