Some trends are harder then others to pull off, especially for men. For example, mixing prints requires plenty of confidence; wearing neon requires confidence and then some. So when I come across a trend that is not only super chic but is also extremely easy to adapt to one’s wardrobe, I have to share.
The monochromatic trend has been a favorite amongst designers for some time. Everyone from Prada to Versace have done full collections focused on monochromatic separates, especially for menswear. So why is this look so popular on the runways?
The answer—because the monochromatic trend can go from the runway to sidewalk with ease, as illustrated by this Fashionisto. While this look is rather simple, there are few key details that take the look from drab to fab.
One of the best things about the monochromatic trend is how easy it is to put together with pieces you probably already own. Every Fashionisto owns (or should own) a great pair of fitted black chinos that can go from an internship to the classroom. If you don’t already own a pair, these pants are a great starting point. The next step is to find a sweater or T-shirt in the same color family to play up the look, like this Fashionisto.
When wearing monochromatic, the key is mixing and matching tones of a color. The subtle contrast in tones is what makes the outfit visually interesting. This Fashionisto opted for a muted black, V-neck T-shirt to contrast against his more vibrant black pants. By using multiple tones of the same color, it makes the outfit look less like an adventure in getting dressed in the dark and more like a purposeful nod to fashion.
The next important key is not to add too many layers. When you bulk up an outfit with a lot of layers in the same color family, the details get lost. Instead, stick to two or three pieces, like this Fashionisto, to really drive home the trend. I love these skinny black chinos with this heather V-neck to get a monochromatic look that is simply magical.
Hint: If you are afraid of sticking to a single color palette, infuse some additional colors into the look with small accessories. This Fashionisto’s desert boots are a caramel color that really act as a neutral in the overall ensemble. While the color is warm, it does not detract from the overall monochromatic trend.
