LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BOYS: Layering With an Edge

Let's Hear it for the Boys

Brace yourselves Pitt students as it’s reached that time of year again. The past few weeks have been somewhat confusing, especially in terms of clothing. As highs and lows of each day have been absurdly plunging from the high 70s to the awkward, freezing lows of 40 degrees, it’s a struggle to decide on whether or not to wear our favorite fall trends. However, the past few days have marked Pitt’s official embarkment on the season of layers.

Taking on one of my personal fall layering favorites, this Fashionisto keeps his look casual, yet edgy. By wearing black skinny jeans and an ivory oversized sweater, he manages to add more texture and dimension (not to mention warmth) to his outfit by layering on a black leather jacket. Leather jackets are a great staple piece as they tend to match with pretty much anything and will help almost any look stand out. If a black leather jacket is a little too bold for you, try buying a lighter colored jacket, which gives a more settle look. Instead of going for a light-colored leather jacket, this Fashionisto tames his grungy outfit by sporting the casual and comfortable leather moccasins. He definitely knows how to kick off the layering season and is the perfect model of a laid-back, yet trendy college student.

Hint: The best part about this Fashionisto’s outfit is that it is simple enough to play with according to your own style. You not only can wear the sweater by itself, but because it’s such a basic piece in terms of color and structure, you can wear the sweater in many different ways in terms of layering, mixing, matching and accessorizing. For example, you can edge up the look a little more by switching the moccasins for combat boots. However, if edgy isn’t your thing, you can make it preppy by wearing colored pants or jeans and layer the sweater over a collared dress shirt. Lastly, in terms of accessorizing, you can add a bowtie or tie if you are looking to dress for a more special occasion or just to look nice on a regular day. The best part of layering, especially in bipolar climates, is that whenever it gets hotter or colder, layers can be taken away or added. So make use of the layering weather this season guys because before long it’s going to be poofy winter coat season.
