The beauty of writing for CollegeFashionista is that your eyes become trained to pay close attention to and appreciate both the smallest and boldest details on almost every eye-catching Fashionista/o on campus. I can’t even begin to stress the amount of times when I have wished so badly that I had my camera with me to document either an intricately patterned blazer or pair of glasses in a vintage frame.
As a writer for men’s fashion, my appreciation has increased significantly for guys who find stylistic approaches that go beyond the mainstream look of sweatpants and a T-shirt, especially given their smaller spectrum of options as compared to girls. Through my fashionable finds and conversations, I’ve come to learn that it’s not always about what one wears but how they wear it. This week I ran into a stylin’ lad on the brink of campus that did just that.
As we’re slowly heading into winter, I have one word for you guys: layering. Donning a gingham button-down, a print that’s been trending in every Fashionisto’s wardrobe lately, he layers up with a simple black Lacoste V-neck sweater. The collared shirt and sweater combination is a timeless technique that is taken even further in this getup by subtly including a hint of detail in the gingham pattern on the collar and the bottom of the shirt that peeks out underneath the sweater. Why layer? It’s practical while showcasing your sense of style. Visible layers that present a balance of colors are key here in having a sleek, suave look.
To finish up his outfit, he wears a pair of Levi’s with some light brown saddle shoes for a refined look. The orange pattern in the upper-half of the outfit and light brown shoes in the lower half serve as a perfect complementary combination just in time for fall. Accessorizing with a pair of Ray-Ban New Wayfarers, he proves that sunglasses once again serve as the final touch to an ensemble.
Hint: Don’t be afraid to try out some new layering techniques this fall! This look can easily be altered with a variation of colors such a brighter sweater and neutral button-down. Add a skinny tie with your button-down and tuck it inside your sweater for a dapper approach. If you’re feeling adventurous, swap out the V-neck sweater for an argyle vest to connect with your inner prepster, or you can even add on a sport coat for a more sophisticated attitude.
