All hail the ugly sweater. Perhaps a better term is “quirky knit” or “eclectic jumper,” because this long-sleeved gem of a top isn’t unpleasant to look at. It’s actually in style.
Fun Fact: I had no idea that a jumper was a sweater until I graduated high school, maybe because I wore a jumper, you know, that knee-length overall-kilt-dress combo, for five years of my life. However, I am no stranger to the ugly sweater. From argyle to fair isle, my collection runs the gamut of every imaginable pattern and color. If you want to match me, hit up your local Goodwill or thrift store. You may even find a sequin shirt or sock tie perfect for Valentine’s Day while you’re at it. Don’t feel like venturing out into the cold? Cozy up in your Snuggie and discover the wonder that is Etsy. See you in two hours. Just so you know, there are ugly sweaters equal to two months’ rent. Sit on that for a few minutes.
Now that we’re finished bowing down to the Cosby sweater, let’s check out the rest of this Fashionisto’s cool look. Once again, Converse Chuck Taylor sneakers win as the staple of college students everywhere, and the more worn-in, the better. Skinny jeans are a staple for a reason. Stray from black or blue and go gray. That one switch-up here really elevates the look.
Rounding out the look is a cool blonde chop. I have seen this style everywhere, and by everywhere, I mean from the runway to the Topman catalog to the head of one of my best friends. Trimming the sides while keeping length on the top adds a certain understated edge, a.k.a. it’s effortlessly cool.
Hint: If you think the ugly sweater only works for a casual day at class, you’re wrong. Throw a button-down under that baby; add some oxfords and you’re good to go for a night on the town.
