If you’re like most people in the world, you have seen (and loved) The Breakfast Club. Maybe it’s something about it being set smack-dab in the middle of the ’80s, or the fact that we can all somewhat relate to Molly Ringwald’s character because she plays the best good girl gone bad. When comparing the male characters, Andrew has always stood out to me because of his jock-chic look and beautiful dirty blonde hair. Also, who doesn’t like a boy with nice arms to fill out a tank top and jeans that fit oh so perfectly? No one can resist that. Nowadays, the athletic look has been kind of in and out in the past seasons, until now. Dressing like a varsity athlete is cool again and more stylish than ever.
This Fashionisto was was right on trend with his varsity jacket. His jacket had a bit of an edge to the traditional varsity jacket because it was all leather, instead just having leather sleeves. Layering for this confusing transition between winter and spring, he had on two hoodies: one gray and one navy. The medium rinse jeans kept the outfit in perfect balance between casual and put together—they give an effortless feel to this athletic look. Lastly, the sneakers were just fabulous. I don’t know if it was the color coordination with the rest of the outfit, their broken in look or the metal plate on the tongue, but these sneakers were the perfect edgy touch to tie together this Fahsionisto’s outfit.
When rocking the athletic trend, there are many ways to go about it. You could take inspiration from this Fashionisto and do a mix of athletic and edgy with leather, metals and dark pieces. You could go the classic route and mix dark reds and navys together along with a pair of vintage-inspired sneakers (think of the pep rally scene in Grease). Don’t be afraid to dig through your dad’s clothes from college! You could also take the athletic trend and give it a modern twist with clean, white pieces and bright sneakers. Whichever way you decide to try this trend, don’t forget to keep the outfit casual and easy!
Hint: The staple piece in this Fashionisto’s outfit, in my opinion, was the varsity jacket. It is a versatile piece that makes him look like an all-star athlete and a style icon at the same time. For a jacket like his, try this one by Band of Outsiders. For the classic look that I mentioned earlier, this burgundy varsity jacket from American Apparel is perfect! As for the modern take on the look, there is a great white jacket, also from American Apparel, that would look great with a pair of colorful sneakers.
